Topographic Analysis of Intertidal Polychaete Reefs (Sabellaria alveolata) at a Very High Spatial Resolution

چکیده

In temperate coastal regions of Western Europe, the polychaete Sabellaria alveolata (Linné) builds large intertidal reefs several hectares on soft-bottom substrates. These are protected by European Habitat Directive EEC/92/43 under status biogenic structures hosting a high biodiversity and providing ecological functions such as protection against erosion. As an alternative to time-consuming field campaigns, UAV-based Structure-from-Motion photogrammetric survey was carried out in October 2020 over Noirmoutier Island (France) where second-largest known reef is located tidal delta. A DJI Phantom 4 Multispectral UAV provided topographic dataset at very resolutions 5 cm/pixel for Digital Surface Model (DSM) 2.63 multispectral orthomosaic images. The footprint mapped using combination two indices: Topographic Openness Index Position Index. covered area 8.15 ha, with 89% corresponding main composed connected continuous structures, 7.6% isolated (<60 m2), 4.4% small clumps (<2 m2). To further describe complexity reef, Geomorphon landform classification used. spatial distribution tabular platforms considered healthy stage contrast degraded proxy that consists comparing volume theoretical tabular-shaped volume. Epibionts colonizing (macroalgae, mussels, oysters) were also combining indices Normalised Difference Vegetation simple band ratios indices. confusion matrix showed macroalgae mussels satisfactorily identified but oysters could not be detected automated procedure due their spectral complexity. used this work should now exploited propose health index these reefs.

Feeding response of the polychaete Sabellaria alveolata (Sabellariidae) to changes in seston concentration

Sabellaria alveolata is a tube-building gregarious polychaete that constructs large biogenic reefs. In macrotidal shellfish ecosystems, this species competes for food with cultivated suspension-feeders. The suspension-feeding activity and clearance rate of S. alveolata were investigated in response to changes in seston concentration. A flow-through system was designed to study 225 cm reef block...

Macrofauna associated with temporary Sabellaria alveolata reefs on the west coast of Cotentin (France)

The polychaete Sabellaria alveolata (Linnaeus, 1767) is an important ecosystem engineer building reef structures which add to the topographic complexity in colonized areas. In Europe, the most extensive reef formation is located in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (France). Since 2006, Sabellaria bio-constructions have developed on hard substrates along the west coast of the Cotentin Peninsula betw...

Particle capture and processing mechanisms in Sabellaria alveolata (Polychaeta: Sabellariidae)

Sabellaria alveolata, a ciliary suspension feeder, is a reef-building polychaete widely distributed in European waters, and is an important element of the trophic web of the ecosystems they have colonised. The lack of data concerning the feeding mechanisms of polychaete sabellariids is an impediment to understanding their roles in these systems. In this study, we combine a descriptive approach ...

Sabellaria and Lygdamis (Polychaeta: Sabellariidae) from reefs off northeastern Brazil including a new species of Sabellaria.

Members of the polychaete taxon Sabellariidae Johnston, 1865 are known to live in sand tubes cemented onto rocky substrata, mollusk shells, or sea grasses. Of 37 known Sabellaria species, only nine were reported for the Brazilian coast, in all cases being associated with aggregates of other species. The genus is considered cosmopolitan. Herein we describe for the first time an aggregate of sabe...

Extragalactic science at very high spectral resolution

I briefly mention a few possible applications of very high spectral resolution spectroscopy with CRIRES to the study of nearby galaxies. This includes the fields of AGN, dynamically cold systems, super stellar and emission line clusters, and a more speculative program on the measurement of gravitational redshifts.
